Leonard of Chios

Leonard of Chios
   Genoese archbishop of Lesbos (q.v.) who wrote an eyewitness account of the Ottoman conquest of Constantinople (qq.v.) in 1453. He arrived in Constantinople in 1452, along with the papal legate Isidore of Kiev (q.v.). Despite being captured by the Ottomans, he escaped to Chios (q.v.) where he sent Pope Nicholas V (qq.v.) a report about the Ottoman siege in August of 1453. After the diary of Nicolo Barbaro (q.v.), Leonard's report is the most important western eyewitness account of the 1453 siege.
